| GEORGE J WECHSLER August 7, 1916 - January 7, 2010 |
| George Wechsler, one-time owner of Wolfe Nursery stores, began working at Alamo Paint Company at age 8, earning a dollar a week. Growing up on a dairy farm, Wechsler developed determination and drive. As a teen, that drive allowed him to go from dishwasher to assistant manager at an H.L. Green store. In 1939, Wechsler accepted a job with the Solo Serve department store, where his tenacious work ethic earned him the merchandise manager position. His dream was to become a business owner. But his fast track to becoming an entrepreneur was soon halted by the onset of World War II. Wechsler earned the Purple Heart and the Silver Star in WWII, but the war experience cost him his right eye. His jeep hit a land mine, killing fellow passengers and sending him to the hospital for six months. Two weeks prior to suffering severe injuries, Wechsler was recognized for taking fire to help secure his troops' safety, his daughter Jan Ramert said. After a six-month stint in numerous hospitals, Wechsler returned to managing, this time at Joykist Candy Company. But after five years, he returned to Solo Serve in hopes of a chance at ownership. “San Antonio was being built up at that time, and his boss needed someone to learn the nursery business,” his daughter said. “Subdivisions needed plants and trees.” Wechsler's boss at the department store offered him a fourth of the nursery business if he showed promise, and he did. “He was really excited about learning the nursery business — he read everything he could about plants,” Ramert said. “He became the plant man.” In 1960, Wechsler achieved his dream. He bought Solo Serve Nursery (eventually becoming Wolfe Nursery) and ran 11 locations. But 10 years later, his injury from WWII forced him to sell. “He had a botched cataract surgery, and since that was his only eye it rendered him blind,” Ramert said. “He didn't know if he'd be able to see again, so he sold the nurseries.” Eventually, surgery repaired Wechsler's sight. And in 1998, he repurchased and revitalized a then-bankrupted Wolfe Nursery. He owned the company until 2002, when he sold it to Calloway's Nurseries. At 86, Wechsler stayed on as general manager of Calloway's, until suffering a stroke in 2004. “He felt like he beautified San Antonio,” his daughter said. “That's what he liked most about the business, helping to beautify the city he loved.” Because of the foundation that George Wechsler has set for us we have been able to carry on his legacy in the nursery business. Much of what we do at Arbolitos Nurseries comes from what he taught us. Thank You for so much! A true trail blazer and pioneer! |
