October check list
For the lawn:
Now is the time for fall feeding of
your lawn I recommend using easy gro premium
winterizer fertilizer 18-6-12 this is the best one on the
market, a 40 lb bag will cover 7000sq ft . the organic
fertilizers also make great winterizers I suggest the
Medina Green and Gro or Milorganite.
Spread compost on the lawn a half
inch thick,this will help protect it from the cold and help
green it up right now.
If you have a fungus problem
spread canadian peat moss on the problem areas this
has proven more effective than the chemical fungicides.
weeds: with all the rain spray a
broadleaf weed killer like Wipeout. Now is the time to use
the preemergent weed killers this class of weed killers
kill the weeds before the sprout. Amaze kills broad leaf
and grassy weeds. Portrait kills broadleaf weeds and
does a great job on clover. Dimension kills grassy weeds
it is great for crabgrass. Remember if you use these you
cannot use bermuda seed or winter grass seed as they
will also kill them . The use of preemergents will give you
3 to 4 months control of weeds.
If you want a green lawn all winter
over seed your lawn with winter rye grass seed . Rye
grass will come up in 7 to 10 days and stay green till
April then slowly die as your regular grass turns green.
You see many businesses and Hotels use winter rye
because it looks so attractive in the winter. Winter rye
grows to 6 to7 inches tall so you will have to mow it. We
sell a dwarf variety called Pantera that only grows 3
inches tall so it looks great and is well worth the slight
extra cost.
